Bookstart

Bookstart offers the gift of free books to all children at two key ages before they start school, to inspire a love of reading that will give children a flying start in life. Torbay Libraries co-ordinate the national Bookstart programme in Torbay.
In your baby's first year you'll receive your free Bookstart Baby pack from your health visitor, or other health professional.
Bookshine packs are available for children who are blind or partially sighted. Children are entitled to this pack in addition to the two standard Bookstart packs.

Gifted by Libraries, Children’s Centres, Street Wardens and some Early Years settings to children aged between 36 – 48 months. You must produce your child’s Child Healthcare and Development book (red book) to claim a pack. Portage, Audiology and some other support  services also gift these packs occasionally.
 
If you speak English as a second language then you are entitled to free dual language books. Please ask at your local library for more information.
